Update: SHT! vs BadJon art opening at 16 Penny Gallery in 52.5 Records

Local graffiti/mixed media artist, S.H.T! and local photographer BadJon will host an art opening and exhibition at 16 Penny Gallery, located inside 52.5 Records at 561 King Street in downtown Charleston on February 6, 2010 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. The exhibition will run through March 2010.

The event will feature hors d’oeuvres served by renowned local underground catering group, Guerilla Cuisine, with tracks spun by the up and coming DJ Rocky Horror and DJ High Horse. All of the pieces in the exhibition presented by the visual artists will be available for purchase immediately, and both artists will be on hand the night of the opening to represent their work.

S.H.T!, specializes mostly in the graffiti medium, but this exhibit will feature other mixed media pieces of the artist’s. Noted for his “Big Boy” stencil images around downtown Charleston, also known as “SHT!heads,” S.H.T! will also be displaying screen prints and giving away stickers during the exhibition.

BadJon, or Jonathon Stout, is a photographer especially recognized for his work with many local talent acts as well as regional publications. Celebrated for his use of an infrared technique and unusual display practices, Stout’s work is ever evolving and critically-acclaimed in the Charleston area. During this show, Stout will be displaying his works on large wood panels for a unique look to his photos.

Both BadJon and S.H.T! have been collaborating creatively since their early high school years, and have been recognized recently for their “Presents from Punks” art benefit show that raised 3500$ for Toys for Tots on Dec 19th 2009 at Mellow Mushroom downtown.

This event is free of charge and open to the public.

Presents from Punks! Dec 19th! Mellow Mushroom!

Presents from Punks! Dec 19th! Mellow Mushroom!

Presents from Punks is this Saturday (December 19th 2009). It’s an annual charity art show hosted by local artists SHT! and BadJon. The show features over 100 pieces of art from a huge list of great local artists (full list near end of post). All art pieces are under the price of $50, as we are trying to let everyone get a great piece of art for affordable prices. Most art would normally go for twice that much in a normal show, but since this is all for charity, all the artists are letting us sell their work for a lot less then usual.

The show is benefiting the local Toys For Tots charity, as well as the Low Country Food Bank. Last year we raised over 2300$ from all the art sales. This year we are trying to double that, so we need your support! This year we have a lot of great deals for people, even who can’t afford much, to get some great art.

Here are some of the things we are having at the event:

-SHT! will have 3 exclusive screen print posters (18×24inch) at the show. Each limited to 50 prints per posters. The prints will be $10 each, and as the night goes on, the prices will drop till all of them are sold.

-BadJon will have a bunch of 8×10 photo prints for sale as well, also starting at $10.

-We also have 1.5 inch buttons for sale, which have pictures of BadJon, SHT!, Dantes Camaro and Rocky Horror (all in Christmas themes from the flyer). We will be selling those for 2 for $1.

-There will also be a bunch of other assorted prints from other artists, none of which are over $10.

-We will also have a bunch of the “Paint by Numbers” (which are paint kits which include small canvases by some great local artists, like Nathan Durfee, Wolfkid, Sinner, Ishmael, Scott Debus, SHT! and more, where you can paint their original pieces your own way) They were featured at Kulture Klash 2 and will be $2 each (they normally were a lot more at Kulture Klash).

Besides the prints, we will have some great pieces of art from these local artists:
SHT!, BadJon, Kevin, Taylor, Proton.Factories, Meta, John Pundt, WolfKid, Bobby Mayo, Natalie Clapp, Mat Brady, Christina Rodino, Phillip Hyman, Scott Debus, Seth Corts, Tim Showers, Lisa Shimko, Kate Kirby, Jessika Stocker, Chrys Rynearson, Parker Nelson, Michael Solano, Fonz, Justin Johnson, Dave Marcotte and Jason Wells from Lucky7s Tattoo, Cletus (with shirts and cds), Celina Kariabas, Blake West, Vik, Aden.ESEN, William August Northcut, Christina Bailey, Justin Cammer, April Robbins, Chambers Austelle, Chuck Keppler, Matthew Bowers, Julio Cotto, Courtney Culver, Kelly Mcdonald, Trina Lyn, Anson Cyr, Alexis Candela, Tiffany Pretlow, Caleigh Bird Goold, Joanna Jackson, Matt Foreman, Bob Mule, Mock Couture, Kyle Robert Heck, Kelly Ochocki, Robert Donovan, Hashenda Baxter, Shelley Smith, Joshua Jourdain, & Corey Roberts

We will be starting art sales at 8pm sharp, so get there early. No sold art will be taken off the walls until 10pm, so that everyone can check out the art. After that, art can be purchased and taken when purchased as the night goes on. We want to sell every piece we have up, so keep an eye out for prices to go down as the night goes on.

Also, Kevin Taylor, SHT!, BadJon and Meta have pieces that will be up for Silent Auction. The auction starts at 8pm and goes until 10pm. We ask that people bid on the pieces with their full name and phone number next to their bid. All bids start at $25, and go up at $5 increments. We will announce who won the pieces right before Dante’s Camaro plays. These pieces are a lot bigger and or expensive, so we are putting them up for auction, rather than just charging $50 for them.

Mellow Mushroom and their alcohol suppliers will be running some drink specials during the night, here’s the low down:
From 8:30-10:30pm Red Bull and Van Gogh Vodka girls will be at Mellow handing out complimentary cocktails of Electric Screw Drivers (either Van Gogh Pomegranate Vodka or Van Gogh regular Vodka, Orange Juice, and Red Bull) and sample shots of Van Gogh Double Espresso Vodka. We are also doing a promotion for Designated Driver (Blow a Zero, Be a Hero). All designated drivers will get Red Bull all night for $2.00.

The music this year is being provided by Charleston’s own Dante’s Camaro, who go on at 10:30pm sharp, and then Rocky Horror will be spinning the rest of the night starting at 11:30pm.

Make sure to check out the City Paper and Preview this week for some nice write-ups about the event.

Kulture Klash 5 – Nov 6th & 7th

Kulture Klash 5 – Nov 6th & 7th

Kulture Klash is right around the corner, and this year they are making it a 2 night event. The first night will be November 6th (8pm-11pm) and it will be 21+. This night will be only for the art crowd. There will be wine and cheese and music as well. Last year they had a lot of people complain about not being able to check out the art, because everyone was so nuts, so they made a new day just for them. I will be showing art, so i strongly urge you to come check it out atleast. I will be selling all affordable stuff since the economy is bad and my wallet isn’t much better.

The November 7th date is when the huge party goes on. They will have all the bands, DJs and performances going on. This year the theme is “Bikes” so if you are a biker, make sure to ride up and check all the stuff out. They will have the usual beer gardens, and crazy projections and a bunch of stuff I don’t even know about yet.

Keep an eye out here for some photos of the setup and some of my art to come.

For info on getting tickets and just general information about Kulture Klash, make sure to check out their website http://www.kultureklashartsfestival.com/

evolution art shows…check em out

Evolution is starting tonight…i will have photos up at 52.5 records downtown, the opening is tomorrow at 6-8pm and it will be up all month…heres a huge write up from the Charleston City Paper:

Spoleto’s cool and all, but it’s not here to stay. Well, neither is Evolution Art Show, but it promises to be the most inclusive local art show to meet Charleston, not just in terms of the artists. The 16-day “Alternative Music and Arts Festival,” organized by artist Phillip Hyman, boasts individual shows of a myriad of media at Vickery’s, Urban Outfitters, Upper Deck, Point Break, Read Bros. Alley, Life Central, 52.5 Records, Recovery Room, The Meeting Place, and South of Broadway Theater – and that’s just this week. Every event will feature both art and live music, and there’s bound to be a lot of show-hopping, because they all look awesome and many are happening simultaneously. We’ve tried to single some out, but it’s not easy when they all sound this enticing:

Going on Fri. May 29, Downtown

Vickery’s Bar and Grill, 6-9 p.m. Live mural with four artists painting, also works by Erin Eckman, Ben Sellars, and more. Progressive jazz with Bored and Pretty. Bonus: Jewelry by Fancy Jewels, Rachelle Rose, Jenni Chism.

Urban Outfitters, 6-9 p.m. “Linen Show, ” featuring soft sculptures and artwork in muted colors of tan, cream, beige, and linen, as well as sepia-tone photography. Music from DJ CMNDER, Matthew Bowers. Bonus: A 12-foot dragon made from canvas and metal inspired by the interior displays of Urban Outfitters.

Point Break, 6-9 p.m. Graffiti by local and regional artists, including Cane Bay High School students. Stencils by Matt Foreman, featuring the artists who have painted graffiti inside Point Break. Musi from DJs “Neon Golden” Bonus: A fashion show featuring swimsuits and Rock ‘n’ Roll T-shirts.

Upper Deck, 8-11 p.m. “Lounge Lizards” featuring progressive local artists with music from DJ Ice Bread & MJ 12. Bonus: drinks, Connect Four, familiar faces from aforementioned events, and lizards!

Going on Sat. May 30, Downtown

52.5 Records, 6-8 p.m. Photography featuring local artists Chuck Keppler, Krista Demattio, BadJon, Hashenda Baxter, Donna Jones, Sarah Goldman, Matt Bowers, and Victoria Dearing. Music from DJ Ice Bread. Bonus: Cool wall decor and lots of vinyl.

Read Brothers Alley, where King St. meets Spring St. 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Craft Fair, featuring local jewelry-makers and clothiers, progressive artwork sculptures, graffiti. Music from Laura Jane Vincent and other local acoustic acts during the day, Subterranean Blu Minds, Quiddity after-dark.

Recovery Room Tavern, 7-11 p.m. Charity auction of “sick” bike helmets designed and painted by local artists. Music from Charleston local MC Pip and “Missing Children” from Savannah. Bonus: Holy City Bike Co-Op will be doing minor tune-up work and bike valeting for donations.

Going on in North Charleston

The Meeting Place, May 30, 7-9 p.m. “What is Family,” a reaction to Prop. 8, featuring artists’ interpretations of what constitutes a “family” and the different forms it can take. Music from Mastadon and Chucktown. Proceeds benefit The Alliance For Full Acceptance.

South Of Broadway Theater, May 30, 4-10 p.m. Movies presented by the Talking Picture House including Grafitti Artist showing at 4 and 7 p.m. Lost Boys showing at 10 p.m.

The Meeting Place, June 1, 6-9 p.m. “Where Art Thou?” Art inspired by Coen Brothers films, artists include Meta, Christina Rodino, Proton, Tim Showers, Phillip Hyman, and more.

The Meeting Place, June 10, 6-10 p.m. Art: “Evolution Fashion Show.” Clothing and jewelry by Jessica Barringer, Shelly Smith, Heather Koonse, Molly Cox, Christine Burkett, Michael Wiernicki, Jenni Chism, Rachelle Rose, Chris and more. Music from DJ CMNDER and MJ 12

The nature of this fest (evolutionary) means that more events should be added over the course of the next few days, so check the website for the latest.

Kulture Klash 4!! Press Release!

Kulture Klash 4 is coming up real soon! the date is April 18th to be exact! Heres a huge press release with all the information you will need to know about the show:

The fourth installment of the bi-annual Kulture Klash Fest is just around the corner! With a generous helping of support from presenting sponsors Mellow Mushroom, this KK will no doubt be one for the history books. With a huge new space, unlimited parking, 8 musical acts and art galore, the possibilities are endless.

The old Lowcountry Food Bank, a vacant warehouse space that offers 40,000 square feet of fun in The Navy Yard at Noisette, is just 2 blocks from the previous KK space. A larger venue was needed to accommodate the growing number of attendees, artists and performers, not to mention that the feel of a raw, unpolished shell is more in line with what the producers had envisioned at the conception of this event.

The unique visual star of KK4 will be an experimental putt putt course designed by local artists and sculptures. The only common theme between the nine different golf holes is that each creator was required to use 50% post consumer waste, in celebration of upcoming Earth Day. Sharing the spotlight with the astro-turf and golf balls will be a custom shoe gallery filled with 15 pairs of artist-altered Adidas Stan Smiths and Superstar shell toes. These one-of-a-kind kicks will be on sale the night of the event and are offered in various mens sizes from 9 to 12.The golf course will be on view during the event, then open to the public for a little “friendly putting competition” April 20, 21 & 22 from 3pm to 8pm each day. Playing the course will cost $5 and all proceeds will be donated to Creative Spark, School of the Arts and the Noisette Foundation.

KK4 offers a much welcomed feminine spin. Rose Knot will be hosting an interactive sewing studio the encourages participants to arrive at the event with scraps of unused fabric, vintage textiles, old t-shirts, that random one sock in your drawer or anything they feel like challenging the girls with. These sassy seamstresses will accept any “sew-able” item you present and transform it into something completely new-to-you, like a headband, wrist cuff, belt or clutch. After you get your new accessory made look for the ladylike lounge spotlighting Charleston Henna Body Art. There will be temporary tattoo artists on site to decorate hands, feet, bellies and lower backs.

Throughout the night party people can treat their ears to the musical likes of KK newcomers Stella by Starlight, a live indie/pop band, DJ Subdue, who will be spinning progressive house music in the kitchen, and Chaos in Gotham who will kick it into high gear with some straight up old school punk. Also joining the scene is ForthNBack, a live hip hop act with MC Femi, who throws his own spin on rhymes while playing old school 90’s beats. Nestled in a side room you will be confused, yet intrigued by the sounds of the Noise Band, described by local artist Carl Janes as “music with a crude rawness that continually and uncompromisingly struggles to get closer to that primal scream.” Comeback kids The Spaced Invaders, known for their massive video screens displaying all their multimedia antics, will mix it up outside on the turntables with special percussion assistance. Prepare to do some booty shakin’ to local favorites Dub Island Sound System while they blow the house up with hip hop/reggae. Rounding out the night is the midnight man Rocky Horror, who beats you over the head with re-mixed indie music. He will be joined by Joycette from Augusta, GA who loves to twist it up with “dirty southern crunk dance music”. PS- For the late night party, wear white.

With seemingly unlimited wall space available, KK4 will feature an astounding 60+ artists. KK is proud to welcome some very talented newcomers who are on the list of “must see” work. Coppersmith Chad Haselden will be demonstrating how he creates vibrant, acid washed pieces with unexpected effects during his heat induced process, Ryan Cronin is displaying curiously colorful acrylic on wood and Paula Pindroh has built an interesting little family of custom creatures. Luckily, Eye Level Art recently unearthed a rare sketchbook of some gorgeous Nicolas Drake pieces. Prints of that collection will be on display and for sale. Jack Alterman, Brian Kane and Kevin Hoth will each have private installations of their work for viewers to absorb all in one spot. Other artists on display include John Duckworth, Megan Lange, Charles Williams and Mary Edna Frasier who will be beautifully intermingling with new works from usual suspects such as Nathan Durfee, Lisa Shimko, John Pundt, Scott Debus, Badjon and Wolfkid. Expect to see multiple documentaries and video feeds during the evening and, of course, there will be lots and lots of live graffiti. It wouldn’t be Kulture Klash without it!

This event could not be brought to this new level without the help of local sponsors. Mellow Mushroom will not only be baking up superb pizzas on site for hungry tummies, but they are also the presenting sponsor. Mellow Mushroom (with 2 locations, Downtown and new Mt Pleasant) has always been a huge supporter of Charleston’s art scene. Joshua Broome, a managing partner, states “The art community here in Charleston has gained some serious traction in the last couple of years. The culture is much more edgy and expressive. As a city we have started to push the artistic boundaries; galleries are no longer inundated with Lowcountry landscapes and expressionists renderings of The Battery. The rise of graffiti artists, screen printers and the like have added an element of ‘punk’ to the local scene. This movement has inspired us to be affiliated with events like KK4 because it truly spotlights the local art and music scene.”

Some new sponsors include: Celadon (who will transform the VIP lounge from a blank canvas into an evening oasis with their colorful, stylish and comfortable home furnishings & decor), local store Point Break joins forces with Montana Colors (who donated paint and spray cans for graffiti), Putter’s Paradise (a new business on Folly that loaned putters and golf balls for the putting week), and Charleston City Paper (who supports KK with a much needed ad and marketing sponsorship). These newbies join KK’s re-occurring sponsor friends PDA Green & Big Hair Productions (lights and sound), Artist & Craftsmen (art supplies) and The Navy Yard at Noisette (event space and parking).

If attendees are thirsty they can visit one of the beverage gardens co-hosted by Social Wine Bar and Tin Roof. The gardens are open to the 21+ crowd only and those drinking will be required to purchase drink tickets before entering the beverage areas. The bars will be serving pints of cold beer along with red and white wine. With an unlimited inventory, the drinks will flow till the wee hours. There will be plenty of Red Bull and SmartWater for those who choose not to drink alcohol.

This event is being held during Earth Day weekend, so the producers have made certain that this would be reflected in a number of ways. Mellow Mushroom will be using the least amount of paper products by serving hand held pizza slices requiring no utensils and creating less waste; in the beverage gardens, beer and wine will be served in compostable/biodegradable corn cups (some re-usable); party guests will be encouraged to recycle their Red Bull cans and SmartWater bottles on site; the LEEP Biodiesel bus will be shuttling people hourly to and from Charleston Museum downtown to the event to reduce the carbon footprint and fuel consumption, as well as get everyone home safe.

New photo galleries and kulture klash 4!

First off…you might notice that I have added 35 new photo pages to my site. Instead of the normal photo blog where the photos are all big and span the whole page, ive started using a flash program that puts them into an easy to use slideshow gallery. I will probably still post the full pages for my posts, but will archive them into the flash gallery…you can view them all by clicking the photo link, thats up at the top right of this page, or you can just look on the right tab of the page and see all the different sections and galleries.

Next…Kulture Klash 4 will be on April 18th! The venue is changed, and it is huge! so dont worry about waiting in line all night and it getting rained out, because all the fun will be inside! If you dont know, Kulture Klash is an art show/party/event…very big and fun…i have shown art in it before, and have helped alot with setting it up. They have live graffiti walls, free redbull, and an all you can drink wrist band for a small price. It always happens in the Noisette area of North Charleston, and they have bus shuttles to and from the event to downtown, so dont drink and drive! This year has some surprises in store, which I cant divulge just yet! So keep and ear and eye out for more information! Heres a small flyer to start the promotions off!
